The driver of a semi was ejected Monday in a one-vehicle accident in Union County.

According to a Union County Sheriff’s Office report, at approximately 1:37 p.m. a 1987 Freightliner semi truck and loaded grain trailer, driven by Russell W. Peterson, 44, of Creston, was northbound on Hi and Dry Road when Peterson said the right front wheel of the semi locked up.

Peterson lost control of the semi and, according to law enforcement, it appeared the semi entered the east ditch and then swerved into the west ditch. As it entered the west ditch, the truck turned onto its side and top dug into the west embankment of the ditch. The semi then overturned and struck the east embankment of the same ditch before coming to rest upright.

Peterson told deputies he was ejected from the semi and crawled to the front of the truck where he was located by law enforcement.

Peterson was transported by ambulance to Greater Regional Health for suspected serious injuries.

Damage to the semi was estimated at $40,000.
