Deakon A. Mullen, 19, of Adair, was taken into custody 5:19 p.m. Jan. 10, in the 100 block of SE 7th Street in Stuart on a Polk County warrant for a controlled substance violation.
According to a Polk County report, at approximately 1:53 p.m. Nov. 17, 2023, while conducting surveillance at the TownePlace Suites in Johnston, detectives witnessed a robbery. While investigating the robbery, a data extraction provided details into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
It was discovered Mullen planned to deliver psilocybin mushrooms to another individual for an agreed price of $150. The text messages outlining the planned sale were discovered when reviewing the intended buyers cellular data extraction. Psilocybin mushrooms were found in the room of the buyer, who was known to be staying at the TownePlace Suites.
Mullen was transported to the Adair County Jail where he was released from after posting $10,000 cash or surety bond.

Justin D. Harlan, 47, of Stuart, was taken into custody 2:25 p.m. Jan. 20, in the 600 block of SW 7th Street in Stuart, on the charges of possession of drug paraphernalia, driving while revoked, possession of a controlled substance - methamphetamine, first offense and possession of a controlled substance with the intent to deliver - marijuana.
According to a Stuart Police report, at approximately 1:06 p.m. Jan. 20, officers observed a 2000 Honda Accord westbound on SW 7th Street, known to be driven by Harlan, who has a revoked license. A traffic stop was conducted, and Harlan was confirmed to be the driver of the Honda and confirmed to have a revoked driver’s license. After being taken into custody, a search of his person resulted in finding a glass methamphetamine pipe containing burnt residue in Harlan’s pocket. Harlan then admitted there was a glass jar containing marijuana in the Honda.
A probable cause search was conducted and the jar was located. It contained a green leafy substance consistent with marijuana which was prepackaged and labeled in two baggies marked as 3.5 grams and 14 baggies marked as 1 gram. A Crown Royal bag containing two used hypodermic needles were also found in the car.
Harlan was transported to the Adair County Jail where he was released from after posting $7,000 cash or surety bond.

Juan A. Perez-Salazar, 37, of Des Moines, was taken into custody 5:15 p.m. Jan. 20, at mile marker 75 of Interstate 80 eastbound on the charges of OWI, second offense and driving under suspension.
According to an Iowa State Patrol report, at approximately 2:34 p.m. and 2:46 p.m. reports of a 2022 Ram dually pickup with a flatbed trailer were broadcast to law enforcement after the truck was reported to be all over the road and almost ran another vehicle off the road near mile marker 55. At approximately 2:51 p.m., troopers observed a truck matching the description given in the right eastbound lane having difficulty maintaining its lane. After observing the truck drive on the shoulder of the interstate, a traffic stop was attempted. After activating both lights and sirens of a patrol vehicle, the truck did not stop and continued to drive all over the road.
Troopers then pulled along side of the vehicle to gain visibility of and by the driver, later identified as Perez-Salazar, who appeared impaired or extremely tired. Troopers motioned to him to to stop, after which Perez-Salazar began to slow down and eventually stopped on the right shoulder of the interstate.
Contact was made with Perez-Salazar, and the odor of an alcoholic beverage was immediately detected when he rolled the window down. The top of an open bottle of Jim Bean was observed and the empty bottle was given to troopers.
Perez-Salazar provided an identification card not a driver’s license. After running his information it was discovered his license was suspended. Perez-Salazar was asked to sit in a patrol unit to which he complied but was observed to have impaired balance and stumbled backward while walking from his truck to the patrol car.
Perez-Salazar admitted to knowing he was not supposed to be driving and said he had gone to Des Moines from Council Bluffs to get his medication. He denied drinking any alcohol that day but said he drank the day before and later, admitted to drinking a lot over the weekend while watching NFL games.
Perez-Salazar was transported to the Adair Fire Department for field sobriety testing. Perez-Salazar was able to complete one test and did not show any clues of impairment. He was taken into custody for driving on a suspended license and transported to the Adair County Jail where troopers continued testing. After Perez-Salazar was requested to provide a breath specimen for chemical testing, he stated he wanted an attorney present and was given opportunity to make contact with one. He told troopers he had attempted contact three times and did not want to continue trying. Perez-Salazar then said he refused everything and wished to take the fifth amendment.
Perez-Salazar refused testing and anything else asked of him without his attorney present. He refused to sign his test refusal.
Perez-Salazar was convicted of OWI June 2014, in Polk County.
He was released from the Adair County Jail after posting $2,000 cash or surety bond.

William R. Johnson, 29, of Fontanelle, was taken into custody 10:46 p.m. Jan. 23, in the 700 block of Washington Street in Fontanelle on the charges of OWI, second offense; possession of drug paraphernalia and child endangerment.
According to an Adair County report, at approximately 10:07 p.m. a 2007 GMC Yukon was stopped for not having license plates displayed and for having a brake light and license plate lamp out.
Contact was made with the driver, identified as Johnson, and the odor of an alcoholic beverage was detected coming from his person. Johnson admitted to drinking two glasses of vodka prior to being stopped. Johnson consented to field sobriety testing and showed clues of impairment during testing. A PBT indicated Johnson to have a BrAC over .08%.
Johnson was able to contact someone to get his vehicle and his four-year-old child who was a passenger. He requested he be able to empty his pockets and leave his jacket with the vehicle and stated he didn’t want deputies to search his pockets. Johnson eventually admitted he was on his way to a family member’s to smoke marijuana when he was stopped. A vape containing THC was found in his pocket.
Johnson was transported to the Adair County Jail where he was searched again and found to be in possession of a small bag of a green leafy substance consistent with marijuana.
Johnson consented to provide a breath specimen for chemical testing. The result indicated Johnson to have a BAC of .096%.
Johnson was cited and released on a summons to appear.
