Larry Johannes, 86, of Massena, died Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2024.

Larry Johannes, 86, of Massena, went to be with the Lord Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2024. Larry, at an early age, placed his faith and trust in Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. Funeral services will be 11 a.m., Monday, Nov. 4, at the Grace Baptist Church in Corning. Pastor Tracy Elwood will officiate. Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m., with family receiving friends from 5 to 7 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 3, at Pearson Family Funeral Service & Cremation Center in Corning. Larry will be laid to rest in the Victoria Cemetery, south of Massena.

Larry Dean Johannes was born July 1, 1938, at home in Cass County. He was one of five children born to Harvey Richard and Lucinda Mae (Ticknor) Johannes. Larry was raised on the family farm and grew up helping the family with all of the farm chores. Larry graduated from Corning High School with the class of 1957. At the age of 21 he moved to the farm where he resided for the last 65 years. Larry loved farming; he enjoyed raising pigs from farrow to finish, raising cattle and being an excellent steward of the land. He always said he “wanted to leave the land in better shape than I received it.” He loved being outdoors and you could find him on the mower or tending to his large vegetable garden. Larry loved all animals, especially dogs.

On April 4, 1986, Larry was united in marriage to Luanne Joy Curtis. Together, their combined families included six children; four children from Larry’s previous marriage and two from Luanne’s previous marriage. Larry and Luanne traveled extensively including to five different countries: Austria, Switzerland, Germany, Mexico and Canada. They have also seen most of the United States. Their favorite destinations were Alaska and Hawaii. Larry loved meeting his coffee buddies at Kay’s Cafe, making and eating his homemade ice cream and was a staunch Republican. Larry and Luanne were long-time members of the Grace Baptist Church.

Preceding Larry in death were his parents; twin sister, Lois Maynes; two brothers-in-law: Leland Inman and Joe Maynes; his nephew, Ed Inman and other extended family members.

Larry is survived by his wife, Luanne of Massena; his four children: Debbie (Leroy) McCuen and Alan (Ronda) Johannes, both of Corning, Kristy (Jon) Waddell of Dexter and Carol (Kenny) Wallace of Menlo; his two stepdaughters: Deanna (Dave) Roth of Cumming and Jody (Kevin) Smith of Winterset; 15 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; his brother, Paul (Janet) Johannes of Massena; two sisters: Ella Mae Inman of Bridgewater and Sharon (Roger) Quam of Creston; along with many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
