Five years ago (2021)
Creston boys soccer beat Indianola 3-1 at Panther Stadium Thursday night. “We played a quality team Tuesday night in Glenwood and played a team from a bigger school tonight in Indianola, so it was nice to get a win against a Class 3A school,” said Creston coach Chad Malmanger.
A Glenwood Rams team loaded with numbers and depth put together 155 points to win the girls track and field team race of the Hawkeye 10 Conference Meet Thursday night hosted by Kuemper Catholic. Scoring in seven entries and medaling in six, the Creston Panthers were seventh-place with 38 points. To lead off the meet, senior thrower Kelsey Fields continued to cement herself in the region’s track history books by sweeping the throws, winning shot put with a toss of 42 feet, 11 1/2 inches and the discus at 136 feet, 8 inches. Her shot put was her second-best throw of her career.
“With the 93rd pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, the Buffalo Bills select Spencer Brown, tackle, Northern Iowa.” When Dawn Aponte, NFL chief football administrative officer, made that announcement on national television late Friday evening, all of the talk about the tall kid from Lenox having NFL potential turned into reality. He was six hours from boarding a flight from Des Moines to Buffalo, New York, to meet with team officials.
10 years ago (2016)
It all came together for the Creston girls track team here Thursday night at the Hawkeye 10 Conference Meet. The Panthers took advantage of perfect weather and dropped fast times all night, finishing second to Glenwood with 133 points.
Allyson Mitchell scored the only goal of the match about three minutes into the first overtime period as Knoxville edged the Creston girls Thursday night, 1-0. Coming off a 5-0 loss to a Chariton team that had been edged in overtime by Knoxville, the Creston team showed improvement Thursday, particularly in ball possession.
In upholding Creston’s rental housing regulatory and inspection policy, Creston firefighters inspect rental properties to ensure they meet minimum quality standards. During a Creston City Council meeting Tuesday, Creston Fire Chief Todd Jackson approached the council about the possibility of amending the policy to make penalties clearer for rental property owners who either don’t register their properties or don’t comply with regulations.
15 years ago (2011)
Scoring 51 points with 12 placings in 10 events, the Creston boys track team had its best overall performance of the season Thursday at the Tiger Relays. The Panthers were third in the 10-team field behind Glenwood, which dominated with 197 points, and Shenandoah with 78 points.
Creston boys finished second in a strong 13-team field at the Trojan Golf Tournament Tuesday. The Panthers finished with 321 strokes, behind Kuemper Catholic’s winning score of 297. The top five scores were all from Kuemper Creston’s Hunter Sickels finished sixth individually and Ryan Palser was ninth as both shot 78. They tied for the best score from schools other than Kuemper.
Creston girls gained their second tennis win of the season, 6-3, over Chariton Tuesday while the boys dropped a 5-4 decision against a Charger team that stands 8-1 on the season. Creston showed its depth in the girls dual, winning the third-sixth singles matches for a 4-2 edge entering the doubles competition. Creston (2-6) then won two of the three doubles matches. In boys competition, the teams were tied 3-3 in singles play and the Chargers won two of three in doubles.
20 years ago (2006)
Many people may not realize what the large ring in front of the restored Creston Depot is, or what it stands for. But a faction of local railroad buffs and railroad workers -- some retired -- want to point out it represents the heritage of the community. With a Depot beautification project about to get under way, there has been discussion of moving the sculpture.
Corning boys and Mount Ayr girls claimed championships Monday in Pride of Iowa golf tournaments. Drew Thompson of Corning was medalist with a 73 at Bedford, and Nodaway Valley’s Brittni Katro took girls medalist honors with a 92 at Leon.
