Throwback Thursday: Creston/OM return 33 lettermen

10 years ago (2015)

Sixteen seniors graduated from a historic Creston/Orient-Macksburg football season last year, but coaches Brian Morrison and Ryan McKim have one message for Class 3A District 8 rivals. “The cupboard’s not bare.” A total of 33 lettermen return from the program’s first 10-win season in history, including 20 juniors.

Eighteen tumblers from the Spotlight State Fair tumbling team competed at the Iowa State Fair tumbling meet on Saturday, Aug. 22 at the Youth Inn on the Iowa State Fairgrounds. Many Spotlight tumblers placed in the top five, helping the team earn fifth-place honors.

The Iowa Association of Track Coaches’ preseason individual cross country ratings released Tuesday include a Creston senior. The preseason rankings are based on runners returning from last year’s State Cross Country Meet. Creston’s Cooper McDermott, who placed 13th in the Class 3A boys race at last November’s State Cross Country Meet, starts the season ranked fourth in Class 3A.

20 years ago (2005)

If you’re looking for a dim, run-down bar in which to drown your sorrows, the new Montgomery Street Pub is not the place to go. Owner Norma Sammons wants her bar to be a cheery place to unwind after work and have fun on the weekends -- and she has renovated her building with that in mind.

It was an overwhelming honor for Nodaway Valley coach Darrell Burmeister -- one that has been years in the making. In Wednesday’s edition of the Omaha World-Herald, Burmeister was named the Western Iowa Coach of the Year for the 2004-05 school year. The 50-year-old coach joins a host of Western Iowa legends to win the award.

It was just a test run, but so far so good. That’s the message of Creston High School’s three fall coaches. Thursday night, the Creston/Orient-Macksburg football squad and volleyball teams ran scrimmages, while the cross country team just ran. For the coaches, the night was about gauging a team’s progress and prospects.

30 years ago (1995)

The Stalker family of Creston has been synonymous with horsemanship excellence nationwide. Make that worldwide now. Todd Stalker, 16-year-old son of Tim and Terri Stalker, is the first Iowan to win the American Junior Quarter Horse World Championship in the western horsemanship competition.

Terry Donahue, Creston’s mayor for the past 14 years, will not seek re-election this fall. In a news release issued this morning, Donahue said it is time for a change after 17 years of public service to Creston as councilman and mayor.

In one of the closest finishes in track history, Donnie McClellan became the 10th different NASCAR late model driver to win a feature race at the Adams County Speedway this season. Lonn Schlueter (modifies) and Greg Miller (pro street) were the other winners in action Saturday night.

40 years ago (1985)

A grant award of $654,750 has been announced by the Federal Department of Transportation, specifically the Federal Aviation Administration, for construction and improvements to the Creston Municipal Airport.

Twenty-one Union County 4-H’ers placed in the 4-H exhibit classes housed in the 4-H Exhibit building at the Iowa State Fair.

The Iowa lottery got underway at noon at Thursday. Cliff Purdue of rural Creston was one of the first to purchase tickets from the Creston Fareway Store.

Eight-year-old Joshua Wilson of Corning received a Certificate of Outstanding Service from Gov. Terry Brandstad on the opening day of the Iowa State Fair. He was among 62 Iowans who received awards for bravery that day and is the youngest person ever to be honored. Wilson was honored for saving the life of his 3-year-old brother June 4 when he pulled him from their burning home.

Barb Henderson, Kent, represented Union County in the state fair 4-H fashion revue. She made and modeled a formal prom dress and accessories. All participants were awarded participation ribbons.

Dance to the The Country Classics this Saturday during the Bunn-O-Matic Charity Ball to raise money for Spina Bifida at the Inn.

When the only thing you’ve ever won is a T-shirt at a convention, winning $5,000 in the Iowa Lottery was an extra special thrill for Eb and Sherry Knuth. The Knuth’s purchased the winning ticket at Casey’s North around 1:30 p.m. Sunday. It was the first ticket Sherry had ever purchased.
