25 years ago (2000)
Creston didn’t have a first team representative named in the Hawkeye 10 Conference, but they had catcher Tim McIntosh make the second team. The senior set the school record this past season for assists by a catcher with 29.
The Panther baseball team held its end of the season awards banquet last weekend. Coach Vic Belger’s club had 13 players letter including six freshman: Nick Blakesley, Jeff Levine, Taften Kuhl, Kyle Wilson, Zach Stofferahn and Gabe Stofferahn.
Creston’s Police Department is one of three in Iowa to receive federal funding to hire a new officer. According to an announcement Monday by U.S. Senator Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), the U.S. Department of Justice awarded $75,000 to the department under the COPS Universal Hiring Program.
Anxious to make Creston his family’s new home, Tim Hood will begin his duties Aug. 14, as superintendent at Creston Community School District.
35 years ago (1990)
Phyllis Kimball of Creston, senior division manager for Park Lane Jewelry of Chicago, Illinois, Dorothy Smith of Diagonal, branch director and Beverly Cordell of Creston, fashion director, will receive awards and on-stage recognition from Arthur and Shirley Levin, owners of Park Lake Jewelry, Aug. 3 to 5 at Crown Convention.
Candy Hays has a signed letter of intent to compete on the Missouri Valley College track squad in Marshall, Missouri. Hays was the senior member of the Creston girls 4x100 relay team that set a school record and qualified for the state meet.
Scott Driskell of Creston threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to give the South a 27-15 lead in Saturday’s Shrine Bowl at the Cedar Falls UNI Dome. “That was probably the most exciting thing that’s happened to me in high school sports,” Driskell said.
In a lengthy, messy process that began nearly four months ago, the Creston School Board used all but 43 minutes to change its mind late Monday night and voted to issue coaching contracts to Creston boys’ basketball and baseball coach Vic Belger. Belger was notified March 15 that his coaching contract would not be renewed. He elected to fight the board, asking for a hearing to keep his coaching position.
45 years ago (1980)
Jill Arterburn, 17, a senior at Bridgewater-Fontanelle High School, was crowning Adair County Fair Queen Wednesday evening at the fairgrounds in Greenfield.
A parked Volkswagon on North Maple Street was pushed into the front of the Coast-to-Coast Store at 111 N. Maple St. early this morning.
The Creston Community Development Council has selected Zalda Geis as the city’s Governor’s Leadership Award.
Reports of skunks in town are still being received by Creston Police and Game Commission officials. Area Game Commission Officer Marc Roberg reported earlier in the week that a skunk was reported to have chased one of the security guards at SWCC,
Six of the 19 projects that had been nominated for inclusion in Creston’s 1980 entry in the Iowa Community Betterment Contest were selected by the executive committee of the Creston Community Betterment Council Friday. The six, announced by council chairman Brent Wynja, are: Creston Community Theatre, Creston Drug Abuse Council, the Railroad Heritage Days - 10,000 Crestonians July 4 celebration, a combined Christmas Basket and sack program, Creston Community Resource Development outh project and the Creston Jaycees Haunted House and community bulletin board.
Twenty-three 4-H’ers at the Union County Fair had exhibits selected to go on the State Fair.
55 years ago (1970)
Sixty-three students who have completed career education programs at Southwestern Community College will be graduated tonight in the summer commencement program.
Creston High School players have received additional honors with the announcing of the Council Bluff’s Nonparell’s All-Southwest Iowa baseball team. The first team found Dave Loos, named as a pitcher and Steve Loos as an infielder whole the second team had Rick Robinson as an infielder and Curtis Jeffryes as catcher.
The Creston Fire Department received three calls as a result of lightening strikes during the thunderstorm Sunday morning. Lighting hit wiring at 905 E. Howard St., entered the residence through a radio at 510 N. Stone St. and through a television antenna at 1203 N. Cherry St.
