Final prep phase for water main project approved

The four divisions which will see water main improvements over the next two years. Each division covers a specific area, Division 1 for Adams and Montgomery Street, Division 2 for Cherry Street, Division 3 for Mills Street and Division 4 for Division Street.

Construction can finally begin on Creston Waterworks’s improvement project.

After reviewing proposed contracts from the previous meeting, the board approved bids from three companies for their water distribution system improvement project across four divisions.

These divisions in general will cover: Division 1 - Adams and Montgomery streets, Division 2 - Cherry Street, Division 3 - Mills Street and Division 4 - Division Street.

United Utilities will cover Division 1, C & J Conservation will cover Divisions 2 and 4 and Crain Construction will cover Division 3.

The first area to undergo construction will be the intersection of Mills and Cherry streets, where the first three divisions converge. Construction will then push into each of their respective divisions.

The board also approved the scheduling of a public hearing on June 10 for instituting proceedings to enter into a loan and disbursement agreement. The utility will borrow a maximum principal amount of $218,000 for improvements and extensions. No taxes will be affected by the loan.

Detailed areas in the improvement project includes:

- Division 1: Adams Street, from Sumner to Walnut; Division Street, from Adams to Howard; Montgomery Street, from Division to Cherry; Cherry Street, from Montgomery to Mills; Mills Street, from Cherry to Vine; Vine Street, from Mills to Montgomery; approximately 250 feet south of Montgomery Street along Walnut; approximately 250 feet south of Montgomery along Vine (in alleyway); Mills Street, from Division to North; North Street, from Mills to Howard.

- Division 2: Cherry Street, from Mills to Townline.

- Division 3: Mills Street, from Cherry to Ash.

- Division 4: Division Street, from Irving to Seneca; Seneca Street, from Division to Sycamore; the intersection of Irving Street and Oak Street; the intersection of Irving Street and Elm Street.

Abbi Brown receives a $1,500 IRWA scholarship from Creston Waterworks general manager Steve Guthrie.

The board awarded a scholarship of $1,500 from Iowa Rural Water Association to Abbi Brown. Abbi is the daughter of Rodney Brown, who works as a treatment plant operator for Creston Waterworks. Abbi plans to attend Missouri Western University in the fall to study respiratory therapy.
