AFTON - With Womens’ Day Out and new bingo nights scheduled for Afton, the Afton Development Corporation met to discuss plans for the events.
From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 5, Womens’ Day Out will take place in Afton. The event is open to all genders, despite the name, and will transport participants a century back in time with a theme of “Roaring ‘20s.”
A vendor fair is planned to take place on the south side of the Afton park square, with local storefronts offering special deals and free samples to the community.
A $5 payment will enter participants in a special drawing for various prizes. Proceeds from the event will be used for future ADC projects.
Bingo nights hosted by the ADC will return following a successful night during January’s annual meeting. While a regular day of the month wasn’t decided at the February meeting, the ADC said they wanted to work with the Afton Community Club’s Tuesday Night in the Park to coincide to bring the two events’ audiences together.
March’s bingo night will take place at 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 25 at the Afton Community Center. The ADC noted the annual meeting’s bingo night took three hours, with a similar expectation for time the March night. Concessions and daubers will be available for purchase.

An election of officers for the new year took place. Despite some comments about shuffling ADC leadership, the organization will continue with the same officers as last year. K’Lea Johnson, Retta Ripperger, Jane Eklund and Jeanne Bryson will continue as president, vice president, secretary and treasurer, respectively.
Johnson noted her participation for the city of Afton’s playground committee, dedicated to reviewing playground equipment for the city to make a decision. She noted a few plans the city had discussed for placing new equipment in the park square but also noted both a high price and a potential to remove longstanding trees within the square.
An estimate for the cost of a 16 feet by 16 feet hexagonal shelter house for the Afton Lake was set at $28,325.57. The price does not include the cost of labor.
