Games like Tuesday’s Hawkeye 10 finale between Creston’s boys basketball team and Harlan produce the type of memories that will stick with those who played for a long time. Creston overcame a blistering hot shooting performance from Harlan’s Shane Chamberlain, who hit seven 3-pointers and scored 34 points, to post a victory in the last home game for seven Panther seniors. The win pushed Creston to 9-11 and 5-5 in the Hawkeye 10.

The Panther girls bowlers led almost all day, ripping through the regional state-qualifying event field at Great Escape in Pleasant Hill Tuesday to earn their second consecutive state trip with a season-high 2,436 pins and a Baker score of 836. The girls will bowl at state in Waterloo Monday, having posted the sixth best regional-winning score among the eight state qualifiers.

Southwestern Community College (SWCC) was recently announced as one of the top 10 Best Online Colleges in Iowa by Value Colleges. Southwestern, who came in eighth on the top 10 list, was the only community college to make the list.

The Creston/O-M wrestling team will be looking to get off to a much better start than last year when the Class 2A State Tournament gets under way Thursday at 2 p.m. in Des Moines. The Panthers went 3-9 on the first day last year and had lost four of seven qualifiers in a matter of hours. Creston/O-M went on to a somewhat disappointing ninth-place finish in the team race. This week the fourth-ranked Panthers send another group of seven to state and expect to battle for team hardware.

The brackets have been released in all three classes for the 2012 State Dual Team Tournament, which will be held Wednesday at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. Creston/O-M (15-0) is making its eighth appearance at the duals. The Panthers are seeded fourth in Class 2A and will meet Charles City (16-7) in the opening round Wednesday morning at 9 a.m.

John Rose produced many accomplished offensive linemen in his 30 years as an assistant football coach in Creston. Now he’s an author on the subject. The retired Creston High School social studies teacher left his post as an assistant for head coach Dick Bergstrom after the 2006 season. His book, “Developing an Effective Run Game - With Zone and Gap Schemes” was released Jan. 24 by Coaches Choice, a publishing firm specializing in “how-to” books for coaches and athletes. The 105-page book includes an introduction that explains the formation of the Creston/Orient-Macksburg philosophy of zone blocking developed over the years as the offense took on various forms.

Second-ranked Bedford pulled away for a 76-53 win over Mount Ayr Thursday night to open Class 1A district play. Andy Schweitzer tied a season-high with 35 points in the win for the Bulldogs. Daniel Showalter and Mitch Grose each led Mount Ayr with 13 points. The Raiders end their season at 6-17 overall.

“Let’s get out of here and go eat!” Those were the words Creston/Orient-Macksburg wrestlers were waiting to hear from coach Darrell Frain Wednesday night after an undefeated first round at the Class 2A state wrestling tournament at Wells Fargo Arena. After all, the seven triumphant Panthers had worked up a hearty appetite after securing six bonus-point victories - three by falls, two technical falls and a major decision - on the way to scoring 24 first-round points. That was second only to No. 1-ranked Ballard of Huxley, which went 9-2 in the first round with two consolation victories for 33 points.

Five students from Southwestern Community College’s Ag Club recently represented the college at the statewide Post-Secondary Ag Student Organization Spring Conference held at Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls. SWCC came home from the event with team and individual honors qualifying them for the national competition in March. SWCC claimed the state title in the beef team event. Three SWCC students placed in the job interview division.

Thirty-three head of ShorthornPlus, the composite Shorthorn recognized by the American Shorthorn Association, were exhibited Jan. 29 in the Junior and Open shows held during the 2008 National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colorado. Grand ShorthornPlus Bull honors went to TEGM RED ADVANTAGE 1200T. The Feb. 4, 2007, bull is owned by B Good Livestock Co. of Creston and sired by HAA CONTENDER 243P.
