Storms packing high winds, heavy downpours wreak havoc in Adair Co.

Power went out in some areas

Severe storms bringing high winds and heavy rains downed this railroad crossing sign late Thursday night and early Friday morning in Stuart.

City workers and residents alike had storm damage to clean up last Friday morning as heavy severe thunderstorms rocked many parts of this area around midnight.

Perhaps the biggest cause for concern came from residents in the Interstate 80 corridor towns of Casey and Menlo, as they were a part of a tornado warning because rotation was detected on radar. Large trees in these communities were downed in some cases.

Greenfield saw several trees fall down in the storm, which packed high winds and brought heavy rain.

Stuart Police posted a reminder on social media that phone alerts are not received based on GPS location, they are broadcast through specific cell phone towers that fall within National Weather Service warning polygons. For instance, the cell phone tower that mainly serves Stuart is just south of town. Phones not using that tower would not have received an alert. Because Stuart was not specifically in the warning, outdoor warning sirens never sounded there.

Officials remind residents that it is important to have multiple ways to receive warnings. Make sure emergency alerts are turned on on your smart phone settings, use NOAA weather radios and stay weather aware before going to bed.
