CARROLL — Nodaway Valley/OM’s softball season came to an end last Monday in Carroll.
The Wolverines went to play Kuemper Catholic in the first round of Class 2A, Region 1 play. The result wasn’t what Wolverine fans wanted — a 9-1, five-inning loss. NV/OM ends its season 5-13. Kuemper improved to 13-19, advancing along the tournament trail. The Knights lost in the next round agaisnt top-ranked Van Meter, 12-1.
The game began in a promising fashion for the visitors as they got two runners aboard with one out in the first. Mattie Thompson reached on a walk and Emma Boswell on a hit by pitch. With a double steal, NV/OM had both runners in scoring position. The Wolverines’ fourth and fifth batters struck out, so they stranded both runners.
The Wolverines got on the scoreboard in the top of the third. Thompson led off with a walk and came around on a one-out triple by Emma Boswell. Boswell was stranded there at third and the Wolverines only had one more base runner the rest of the game.
Kuemper’s lead began in the first inning on an RBI groundout by Charlotte Schwabe. In the bottom of the third, a two-run double from Kaylie Wolterman was instrumental in giving Knights a 7-0 lead.
Emma Boswell drove in the only run of the game for the Wolverines and also reached via a walk. Thompson and Caroline Britten also reached on hit by pitches.
In the circle, Ella Boswell took the loss after working four inning for the Wolverines. She struck out two, walked two and gave up nine runs on nine hits.
Junior Myli Schaefer was the winning pitcher in five innings of work. She struck out 15 and walked three batters in just her sixth start of the season, after she missed much of the summer due to an injury.
Kuemper Catholic had nine hits as the Wolverines struggled to contain the Knights’ leadoff hitter Chloe Gehling, a left-handed slap hitter who went 2-for-2 with three runs scored and a walk. Gehling was also a menace on the bases, going 6-for-6 on steal attempts. Schwabe also drove in three runs on a double and Schwabe turned in a two-hit, one RBI game.
