The Mount Ayr Raiders edged the Lenox Tigers in a down-to-the-wire finish in the boys team race while the Central Decatur Cardinals cruised to a team championship on the girls side of the Pride of Iowa Track Championships Monday, May 5 at Nodaway Valley High School.
Mount Ayr’s boys scored 137.5 to Lenox’s 136, with the Raiders the last two races head-to-head over the Tigers. Central Decatur’s girls won six different events on the night, leaving who would win the girls championship never in question.
Nodaway Valley’s teams finally got their home meet out of the deal as their home meet earlier in the year was canceled because of inclement weather.
The Wolverine boys were third, scoring 91. Two dual-gold performers for NV were Gabe Winkelmann in the 1600 and 3200m runs and Trent Warner in the shot put and discus. Other area boys teams included Southwest Valley in fifth (86) and East Union in ninth (9).
The Nodaway Valley girls finished seventh (39), with their highest finishes coming from junior Izzy Eisbach in the 800 and 1500.
Girls
Eisbach ran a 2:30.61 in the 800, behind Martensdale-St. Marys’ Maclaine German, who ran a winning time of 2:28.77. In the 1500, the Blue Devils’ Karson Oberender won the race in 5:00.09 with Eisbach at 5:14.08. Oberender won the 1500 and 3000.
Senior sprinter Maddie Weston took fourth in the 200m, running a 27.79, with junior Haisley Zoubek eighth in 29.06. They finished the same in the 100 with Weston running a 13.45 and Zoubek 13.97.
NV’s sprint medley and 4x100m relays each took fifth. On the sprint medley, Allie Cornelison, Weston, Kylie Nelson and Zoubek ran a 2:02.74. In the other, Cornelison, Weston, Nelson and Zoubek ran a 54.27. Individually, sophomore Allie Cornelison was seventh in the 100m hurdles (18.44) senior Jazz Christensen was eighth in the 3000 (14:51.39).
Boys
Warner began the meet with a bang as both of his throws were POI records. He threw 170-11 in discus and 54-11 in shot put. Winkelmann’s 1600 time was 4:47.85 and teammate Luke Kading was third (5:00.12). The distance tandem ran to the same placings in the 3200 with Winkelmann in 10:58.80 and sophomore Luke Kading in 11:06.07.
Cassius Burnside, Erik Jensen, Titan Foster and Eli Harris ran a runner-up sprint medley time of 1:43.26. Haden Colton, Keyin Steeve, Paul Kading and Winkelmann were third place in the 4x800m relay (8:58.62).
In the 4x400m, the Wolverines were fifth (3:54.96) with Haden Colton, Jensen, Paul Kading and Winkelmann. Sophomore Haden Colton was also fifth in the 400 (57.51).
Sixth-place finishers were the 4x100m (Burnside, Steeve, Foster and Harris) with a time of 48.44, distance medley (Micah Cronk, Trevyn Colton, Kaden Stonehocker and Cheribum Mercado) in 4:17.96, senior Eli Harris in the 400m hurdles (1:00.25) and Burnside in the 100m (11.99).
Junior Ashton Honnold was seventh in discus (126-03) and eighth in shot put (38-02.50). Haris ran to an eighth-place time of 2:17.66 in the 800 and Foster was eighth in the 400m hurdles (1:03.53).
